How To Tell If You Have Rosacea

As we get older, we can sometimes assume that facial skin problems such as redness, an uneven tone, dryness, thread veins and blemishes are caused by sun damage and age. However, while these problems can be caused by the sun, they may also be signs of a medical condition called rosacea.

Rosacea is a common condition that typically develops after the age of 30. It is treatable, although there is no complete cure. The symptoms may come and go, and sometimes worsen with age. The signs of rosacea tend to vary between individuals, and the condition can sometimes be confused with eczema or acne.

The main signs of rosacea

Persistent redness, which makes you look as though you are permanently flushed or sunburned, especially on the cheeks and nose, is one of the main diagnostic symptoms. You may also notice that your skin is thicker and dryer in the affected areas.

If you are prone to blushing or hot flushes, you may be more severely affected by rosacea. Other symptoms include bumps and pustules which resemble acne, and thread veins across the central areas of the face.

What causes rosacea?

The causes are largely unknown, although genes are thought to be a factor. Certain lifestyle and environmental factors are known to trigger or make symptoms worse, including drinking excess alcohol, hot beverages, eating spicy foods, temperature extremes, exercise, and sun and wind exposure.

How is rosacea treated?

If you suspect you have rosacea, visit your GP, who will make a diagnosis and if necessary, prescribe a topical gel. Identify your triggers and avoid them where possible, and use gentle skincare products and daily sunscreen. If you have persistent redness, this can be improved with a chemical skin peel treatment at a professional health and beauty clinic.
