How Does Skin Type Affect Skincare?

Everyone knows there are certain aspects of people’s skin that will have an impact on their skincare. Obvious examples include how dark or pale it is in relation to the need to take steps to protect it from the hot sun in summer, or when one might have a particular skin condition.

However, other factors may not be as obvious or well-known, nor the fact that your skin changes over time for various reasons.

Speaking to Mail Online, a group of experts have outlined how there are various ways in which skin differs. If you want to book facials in Solihull or any other kind of treatment, it will help to know what the attributes of your skin are and how this determines what the most appropriate treatment is.

The experts noted that features like oily skin, acne and blackheads are signs of oily skin, whereas dull hues and tightness are signs of dryness. In fact, there are five skin types, according to Dr Ross Perry, the Medical Director of cosmedics UK. These are: oily/acne prone, dry, balanced, sensitive and combination.

Knowing which of these categories your skin falls into will be important when it comes to matters such as when and how much moisturiser to use, and whether certain cosmetics should be avoided. However, he also noted that this is not fixed; your skin changes over time, so the solution that worked years ago may no longer be appropriate.

Dr Perry said: ”If for example in your 20’s you suffered from oily/acne prone skin, you may have reached your 30’s and now find your skin is more dry with oily T-zone for example.”

“Hormones, lifestyle, genetics, pregnancy and the environment all play a role in determining our skin type,” He added.

With the summer now giving way to autumn, you will no doubt need to make a number of changes to your skincare, the most familiar being to use more moisturiser. But to get the formulation right, it helps not only to know what sort of skin you have, but how it has changed.
