Marionette lines are defined as the lines that run from the corner of the mouth to the chin and have several causes, the main being the ageing process, which results in the reduction of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. The loss of the above naturally found human body proteins, causes the sagging of cheeks, creating marionette lines. Another reason includes the movement of the muscles in your lips and around your mouth when you talk, smile, smoke, kiss etc, which causes the skin to lose its elasticity and firmness. Other factors include persistent exposure to the sun, diet, genetics, and stress all play a key part causing marionette lines to become more pronounced.

At Dermalogic Aesthetics, we treat marionette lines by the injection of hyaluronic acid fillers under the skin and over the area of volume loss, to restore the plumpness and youthful appearance, lifting the skin folds/lines from nose to mouth.

This procedure is safe and straightforward with minimal or no downtime.

TREATMENT

On the day of your treatment, you will be given some more information about your treatment and will also have an opportunity to ask any last-minute questions you may have. Consent forms will also be signed during this appointment. The initial stage involves applying numbing cream to the treatment areas. Once it has taken effect, the dermal filler is injected in precise locations into the skin. The practitioner will then massage to smooth the product. During the procedure, you are fully awake and will be given a mirror to hold to enable you to see the results. The treatment takes about 45 – 60 minutes and, although you may experience some slight swelling or bruising, you’ll be able to see the results straight away.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your medical practitioner any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently asked questions.

Dermal filler is a gel made from hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar that we all have. To resolve nuisance wrinkles, it’s injected beneath the surface to plump up surrounding tissue.

There are several different age-related changes that take place when marionette lines form. While many people begin to gain weight with age in the hips and stomach, the opposite is true in the face. Volume loss can make the face appear gaunt and haggard, leading to lines and folds. Contributing to this are several other factors, including the loosening and sagging of facial skin and ligaments. Finally, collagen loss in the skin makes the skin lose a lot of its elasticity and support over time, leading to folds and wrinkles.

While anyone can get marionette lines, they may have genetic and lifestyle components. People who smoke or spend lots of time in the sun are generally more prone to early signs of ageing, but marionette lines can catch up to anyone eventually, particularly if the problem runs in the family.

There are a few options for softening the appearance of marionette lines. The easiest and most accessible treatment available is facial fillers. Dermal fillers are an effective treatment for marionette lines; they increase volume under the skin and reduce the marionette fold lines. They work by providing extra fullness to the area where wrinkles are apparent. These injectable treatments are temporary, but they are also non-invasive, require no downtime, and are highly effective. They are also cheaper than surgical options upfront. Treatment must be repeated approximately once every six months to maintain results, however.

It’s not always possible to prevent issues like marionette lines from cropping up, but that doesn’t mean it’s futile to try. If you’re worried about developing the problem in the future, the first thing to consider is your lifestyle. It is important to avoid habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and tanning to help keep your skin healthy. In addition, a regular skin care routine and healthy habits like a balanced diet low in junk food and consistent exercise can do wonders in holding off ageing. Starting mild anti-ageing procedures early on may also benefit you in preventing more obvious signs of ageing. It’s not possible to stop the clock of ageing entirely, but you can slow it down with the right approach.

You can expect your procedure to last around 45 minutes depending on the amount of correction required. Your treatment session with include a consultation to ensure the medical practitioners fully understand what you’re looking to achieve.

Our Clinicians will always provide a consultation before treating you, but you can usually have the treatment during the same appointment. Consultations are absolutely important to our medical practitioners understanding exactly what you want to achieve with the lines and wrinkles in your nose-to-mouth area.

The brilliant thing about dermal filler treatments is that the results are immediate. It’s important to note though that your skin will settle over the following few days – you’ll then see the finished result in it’s entirely!

The products we use have built-in anaesthetic called lidocaine which helps with minimising discomfort during the procedure. In addition, we apply an anaesthetic cream to help make your treatment as comfortable as possible. As with any medical procedures, a small amount of discomfort can be felt but our medical practitioners are all sympathetic to go at a pace your happy with and understand your concerns so that most customers feel very little at all.

No, unfortunately we don’t treat ladies while they’re pregnant or breast-feeding.

No. The lines you had in the marionette area will instead return to how they were before you began your dermal filler treatment.

No. The dermal fillers we use take on the characteristics of the body’s own tissue so you shouldn’t feel the dermal filler once it’s in place. The product is similar to a smooth gel which is injected below the skin.

This depends on how many syringes of dermal filler you need to assure a fabulous looking treatment. We actually offer a discount on additional syringes after the first. Your medical practitioners will offer you honest advice about how much treatment you’re likely to need before you decide to go ahead.

Yes. Only 1 in 20,000 treatments result in an allergic reaction. Although dermal fillers can be reversed using another injection (hyalase), this requirement is extremely rare but you can be assured that our medical practitioners are all fully trained should this be required or requested.

A dermal filler procedure is typically straightforward and needs no recovery time, so you can immediately crack on with your day. Customers should avoid excessive alcohol, exercise or the heat of the sun for the first 24-48 hours.

The gel is broken down naturally and reabsorbed by the skin. This means that over time your results will slowly fade and you’ll require additional treatment to stay loving your look.

Most possible side effects are related to the action of injecting the skin, not the product itself. These include: redness, minor swelling, itching, tenderness around injection site and potential lumps in the treated area. These can be reduced by massage.

The medical practitioners all highly trained in how to deal with side effects to ensure you get the best from your treatment.
