Our clinics in Bristol, Cardiff and Coventry offer an effective crow’s feet treatment using Botulinum toxin. Crow’s feet, frown lines and Forehead lines are 3 areas that are commonly treated together although don’t need to be. Lines are created in these areas due to consistent muscle contraction and can create a tired and stressed look. Anti-wrinkle treatments can be used to both soften and improve their appearance but also prevent them from progressing and worsening.

Over time, movements such as squinting, laughing, and smiling causes lines and creases to form at the corners of the eyes. Because of the shape of these wrinkles we commonly refer to them as ‘crow’s-feet’.

In our younger days the wrinkles that form at the sides of the eyes disappear when we relax our eyes and face. As we get older, the body stops producing collagen (which keeps skin supple and firm) and elastin (which helps skin ‘bounce back’ after making facial expressions), causing these lines start to appear even when our face is relaxed and rested. This is when we start to show our age and years of hard work and stress around our eye area. Other causes include UV exposure, smoking and genetics.

Crows’ feet treatment using anti-ageing treatments, allow us to restore that youthful look and significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles at the corners of the eyes.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER

Repetitive facial expressions: Repeatedly frowning causes furrows between the brows, which can deepen over time can have a lasting effect on the skin.

UV exposure: Frequent exposure to the sun’s damaging rays can destroy collagen and elastin in the skin, two proteins that contribute towards elasticity. This makes skin more likely to sag and form wrinkles.

Ageing: A natural part of ageing is the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin, as well as the loss of subcutaneous fat, which gives skin a plump and firm look. As these disappear, skin sags and wrinkles start appearing.

Genetics: Wrinkles around the eyes can be hereditary, generally passed down from father to son and mother to daughter, but only in regards to the point in life at which wrinkles start to appear.

The TREATMENT PROCESS

PRIOR TO THE TREATMENT

The first step is to speak to one our medical practitioners from our Bristol, Cardiff or Coventry clinics. You’ll be able to talk to them about why you’re considering anti-wrinkle treatment, the likely costs, and when you’d like to have the treatment. If you feel ready, we’ll then book you in for your free consultation. At your free consultation, your medical practitioner will ask you about the results you want to achieve. They’ll guide you through your treatment options and create a personal anti-ageing treatment plan for you to ensure you achieve the best results. It may be that we’ll recommend an alternative treatment type – like chemical facial peels, micro-needling or dermal fillers – that we think will better suit your needs. You can discuss every aspect of your wrinkle treatment with no obligation to go ahead. Our medical practitioners are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you have. If you feel ready to go ahead, we can book your treatment in for a date and time that suits you.

TREATMENT

On the day of your treatment, you’ll be able to go through any last-minute questions with your medical clinician. The Botulinum toxin will be injected using a very fine needle to carefully complete the series of small injections. This usually takes about 30 minutes in total and, although it may be a little uncomfortable, it shouldn’t hurt. The injections temporarily relax the facial muscles to smooth out lines and wrinkles. Your treatment may involve injections to the forehead, in between the eyebrows, crow’s feet or other areas, as agreed with your clinician.

POST TREATMENT

You’ll be able to leave the clinic as soon as your treatment has been completed, and you should be fine to go about your normal day-to-day activities. You’ll just need to avoid tilting your head forwards for a while and avoid exercise for the next 24 hours. If you experience soreness in your face, you can take painkillers to ease the discomfort. It can take up to a few days for the muscles to relax and for you to see the results. We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself, so we’re here to support you. If you have any questions or concerns at all, you can contact our 24/7 helpline. Line and wrinkle treatments can be very effective and on average lasts up to 3 months, depending on the patient. After your initial treatment, the effects of future treatments should last longer as your muscles are already trained to relax. If you’re looking to maintain a youthful and rejuvenated appearance, further treatments are usually recommended every three months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your medical practitioner any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently asked questions.

Botulinum toxin, is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. The toxin blocks the transition of chemical messages sent from the nerve to cause the muscle to contract. Without these messages, the muscle stays in a resting state until the ‘messengers’ recover. This recovery takes approximately 8 to 12 weeks on average.

All botulinum toxins are prescription only medicines (POM) and can only be prescribed by doctors, dentists, prescribing nurses and pharmacists with a prescribing qualification, following a face to face assessment and consultation with the qualified prescriber.

After treatment it is expected that you will start to see an improvement within 2 or 3 days. The full result may be judged at 2 weeks. You may be invited to attend a review appointment after 2 weeks where the success of the treatment may be assessed and adjustments to your personal treatment plan made, if necessary.

You will be advised to keep the target muscles active for a few hours and to avoid extremes of heat or cold, vigorous exercise, lying down or leaning over for 4-6 hours.

It may not ‘completely freeze’ the expression, particularly if extreme effort is exerted to make an expression. Botulinum toxin is not suitable for lines present without expression (static lines), your medical clinician will advise you.

There may be only a partial reduction in movement this very much depends on the amount administered and location of product placement – This is not a one size fits all treatment and may be tailored to suit your individual requirements and expected treatment outcomes – discuss this with your clinician at the time of consultation.

Only you and your medical practitioner can decide if the treatment is right for you and your concerns. During your medical consultation, our expert medical practitioners will assess your medical history and make sure you are suitable for the treatment.

Ensure to tell the medical clinician about all of your medical conditions, including:

  • A disease that effects your muscles and nerves such as Myastenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome
  • Allergies to any Botulinum toxin products
  • Medication that you are currently taking
  • Whether you have had any facial surgery or plan to have surgery

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or breast feeding

All treatments carry a degree of risk. All risks and complications will be discussed with you at consultation and prior to any treatment being agreed. Injection related side effects are minimal and temporary such as redness, swelling and bruising. Spreading of the Botulinum toxin to the muscles nearby can be easily prevented by avoiding rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 4 hours. Adverse events are uncommon, usually occur within a few days of treatment and are expected to be temporary, usually resolving spontaneously within weeks. Your medical practitioner will provide aftercare advice designed to minimise risk and promote speedy recovery from any expected side effects.

On average 2-4 months. In order to achieve the best prevention of aging lines, it is recommended to have the treatment regularly every 3 months

A very fine needle is used and generally this treatment is not painful and can be well tolerated with no anaesthetic. Ice may be helpful in numbing the skin for nervous patients as well as reducing the risk of a bruise.

The treatment result is down to your preference. Your medical practitioner will discuss and tailor the treatment to what you prefer. Most patients prefer the fresh and natural look.

The relaxant effect of the Botulinum toxin will wear off over time and you can effectively continue or discontinue at any time that suits you. However, regular treatments will prevent those deeper, more permanent lines that appear with age. There are no long-term side effects of Botulinum toxin injection reported until now.
