Medical microdermabrasion is different to simple microdermabrasion offered in many salons.  The medical microdermabrasion machine allows the use of higher pressures and speeds and the results are deeper and significantly better. Medical microdermabrasion works by removing the stratum corneum, the very top layer of the skin. Thus leaving a younger, fresher skin beneath. The force of the crystals stimulates collagen and elastin growth deeper in the skin, which itself freshens the skin and restores some support and volume.

Medical microdermabrasion involves the use of tiny medical grade aluminium crystals being passed over the skin using a handheld device, through a vacuum directly on the outer layer of the skin. The medical grade aluminium crystals are much more inert and specially manufactured to ensure a consistent shape for optimum results.

It involves tiny crystals being blown against the skin at high speed through a small tube.  The crystals are specially manufactured to ensure a consistent shape for optimum results.  The tube is passed over the skin slowly and it simultaneously blows the crystals out whilst it vacuums up crystals and dead skin cells, helping to remove imperfections, fine wrinkles, blemishes and superficial pigmentation.

The treatment is usually performed on the face but can be used anywhere.  Other common areas include the neck, upper chest and the hands.

PRIOR TO TREATMENT

The first appointment may be a quick over-the-phone discussion with one of our specialist clinicians.

We will discuss your skin concerns, why you may be considering medical microdermabrasion and whether this is the right treatment option for you. If you feel ready, we will then book you in for your free consultation with one of our clinicians.

At your free consultation, one of our highly trained clinicians will discuss in detail about the results you want to achieve. Our clinicians will then guide you through your treatment options and create a personal treatment plan for you to ensure you achieve the best results. Medical microdermabrasion can also be used to enhance the results of other skin rejuvenation treatments such as chemical peels, masks, dermal fillers and hyperhidrosis. You can discuss every aspect of your treatment with no obligation to go ahead. Our clinicians are extremely knowledgeable and highly trained and will happily answer any questions you have. If you feel ready to go ahead, we can book your treatment in for a date and time that suits you.

THE TREATMENT

On the day of your treatment, you will be given some more information about your treatment and will also have an opportunity to ask any last-minute questions you may have. Consent forms will also be signed during this appointment. The initial stage involves cleansing of your skin, to ensure we are starting with a clean palate. The treatment then involves polishing the top layer of your skin and then ‘vacuuming’ away the dead skin cells. Unique wands carefully polish your skin to help reveal a more natural radiance. This helps to reduce fine lines and rejuvenate the complexion quickly and without discomfort. It promotes lymphatic processes, which eliminate toxins and bring nourishment to the skin. A moisturiser and sun block are then applied as healthy new skin cells are exposed to the elements and will need initial protection. The treatment usually takes around 20-30 minutes.

POST TREATMENT

You’ll be able to leave the clinic as soon as your treatment has been completed, and you should be fine to go about your normal day-to-day activities. We believe that the highest quality aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself, so we’re here to support you. Aftercare will be explained to you before you leave our clinic and you will have the opportunity to ask us anything if required once you have left the clinic. A course of a minimum of three treatments is usually recommended to achieve the best results. We normally allow one to two weeks between treatments. After your course of microdermabrasion treatments, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles should be smoothed, the complexion improved and the skin tone may appear brighter.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You’ll have the opportunity to ask your medical practitioner any questions as part of your consultation, but to start the ball rolling here are the answers to some that our patients most frequently asked questions.

The procedure is non-invasive, 100% safe and it does not damage or scar the skin in any way.  All dead skin cells and used crystals are vacuumed into a separate filtered chamber and then disposed of to prevent the risk of any cross-contamination.

Medical microdermabrasion exfoliates deeper than most other systems in order to achieve the desired results and the procedure may sometimes be mildly uncomfortable, but it is not painful.

After treatment, the skin will feel much cleaner, fresher and firmer.  It is usual to get a slightly reddened complexion immediately after treatment, looking and feeling as if you have just been for a walk in a brisk wind which may last up to a couple of days.

Bruising, infection and even bleeding can occur, but these are extremely rare, especially on healthy skin.

Treatment usually takes about 30 minutes and you may notice some results immediately.  More commonly a course of between 3 and 6 sessions, two weeks apart, gives the best results.  You can then choose to have further treatment two or three times a year to maintain the effects.

There is little recovery time – you can have the procedure in your lunch break and return to work for the afternoon.  The skin should be treated with a good moisturiser and sun-block after treatment and for several days afterwards.

Aftercare advice

Following your microdermabrasion treatment, you may experience some redness on the treated areas accompanied by a warm glow.  This will last for several hours but should have settled by the following morning.

Make-up should not be applied for at least 4 hours after your treatment.

DO NOT pick, peel, scrape, scratch or wax your skin.

Avoid abrasive sponges for 1 week after treatment.

Avoid other cosmetic procedures without the specific guidance of your practitioner.

Wash with a very mild soap, rinse with warm water and remember to moisturise regularly following the treatment as you may experience some dryness for a few days.

Avoid sun-exposure and use a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sun-cream of at least SPF30.

Avoid the use of any creams that are in any way irritating.

For the best results we recommend a course of 6 treatments at intervals of 2 weeks.

Remember – cleanse, moisturise & protect!

As a responsible provider of cosmetic surgery, we understand that each individual’s procedure is different and will be tailored specifically around the patient. Because of this, we place a great deal of importance on our free face-to-face, no obligation consultations. Following our consultation process your patient advisor will provide a detailed pricing overview around the particular procedure.

Typically treatments are once or twice a week for 6 treatments and one per month thereafter. Your fully trained practitioner will discuss your suitability to treatment and create a personal treatment plan to help you achieve the best results.

After your course of microdermabrasion treatments, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles should be smoothed.  In addition to smoothing and improving the complexion of your skin, it can give it a more luminous glow and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Your skin tone should also appear brighter. Non-surgical treatment results and benefits can vary and are different for each individual.
