What Is Rosacea, And How To Treat It

April is Rosacea Awareness Month, and people will generally share their experiences with the condition on social media to raise awareness. We wanted to get a closer look at the problem, what causes it, and how to treat it.

Those who are battling with rosacea daily will be able to tell you about the dry and sore skin, unexplained flare-up, and an ongoing struggle with skincare routines. It can even affect sufferers social lives as they avoid certain situations to prevent anxiety related to their skin condition.

Here’s everything you need to know about rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that usually occurs on the face and can affect all skin types. It may also present as persistent redness, blood vessels and spots which can look similar to acne, although the two should not be confused. It is more apparent in Caucasian and European individuals who have fair skin.

There are four main symptoms to help identify rosacea: persistent flushing of the face; thread veins and visible blood vessels which need laser treatment to remove; red spots which can contain puss; thickening of the skin, which can also appear as bumps.

Rosacea can sometimes be mistaken for eczema or dermatitis, as a patient will only appear to suffer from inflammation and redness of the skin and may not have spots that can cause it to look similar.

While the cause of rosacea is not completely known, it can be triggered by alcohol, tea or coffee and spicy foods.

There is no known cure for rosacea although there are a number of effective treatments that can help to alleviate the symptoms, such as antibiotics and topical medications which can be prescribed by a doctor. For redness and flushing, laser treatment can be an effective solution.

Avoid anything you know could aggravate the skin further. It is always a good idea to try and use natural, gentle, non-fragranced skin products when suffering from a skin condition.

If you can identify any triggers that cause rosacea to flare up, whether that be certain foods or drink, it is important to try and avoid these, however, the most important thing is to seek medical attention if it persists.
